Thank you everyone for your advice.

I was aware of Ubuntu 9.10, but haven't decided when I'm going to upgrade to it. I almost installed the beta, but I'm also messing around with the innards of my PS3 and need the laptop to look up information. e-paperweight.

I guess the whole point of attempting this was to see if I could do it, if not, find out why, and learn from the experience.

I've compiled other projects before, with reasonable success.

I ran apt-get build-dep compiz, assuming the build dependencies would be roughly the same for 0.8.4 and 0.8.2, so I should have all the right stuff.

I kept receiving messages to set some path, and that's kinda where I ended.

I used to use GIT4CF, but I don't think it's being developed anymore - so I figured it's time to fetch the sources, install build dependencies, compile, and install. In the process I learned some bash commands to simplify life, so not all is lost ;)

I used to code and customize Amiga computers, so I'm a tinkerer, and eager to learn.

Tristan, you could save yourself the hassle of compiling if you wait for Ubuntu 9.10 to be released in two weeks. It should have Compiz 0.8.4 by default.

About getting packages for the latest versions for Ubuntu, usually there are community members who put together ppa repositories that people can use with apt-get/synaptic. A good starting place would be to google something like "Ubuntu 9.04 Compiz 0.8.4 repository" and see what you find.
Like Vincent said, if you can avoid it don't compile software yourself, and with major distros like Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. with large software repositories (and numerous community-supported 3rd party repositories which can be added) most of the time compiling software can be avoided.

Tristan,

If you're new to linux, I would recommend not compiling any programs at all. Your distribution takes care of compiling packages for you and Ubuntu will probably be doing a good job at that (unless you're having problems with the current package in the repo's?)

If you're new to compiling and want to get the hang of it, start of with smaller packages which have less dependencies...

Tristan, do you have the necessary dependencies listed in the "Installing from source tarballs" section here:

Hi!

I'm still in the process of learning Linux, and I am having problems compiling and installing 0.8.4. Can you point me in the direction of a good how-to guide? I'm running Ubuntu 9.04.

Thank you!
