Gujarat Education Board(India) goes Open Source
by cyberorg, Sunday, June 22nd, 2008 @ 10:02 am

This is what I got my hands on yesterday, it is new revised Syllabus for 11th and 12th grade. Needless to say that I am thrilled with this news :)

For the uninitiate, this is the turning point we have been waiting for that would take Linux to every computer user. Imagine millions of students who are aware of what Open Source Software and Linux is before they join universities. Who in their right mind is going to use Vi$ta after trying out openSUSE 11.0 in all it’s compiz glory?

openSUSE-Education is also better placed to cater to this immediate huge demand for Linux distribution specifically tailored for education. With KIWI-LTSP the school administration does not have to worry about getting every computer installed with the OS that is required to meet this new education board’s directive. All that the computer department admins have to do is install KIWI-LTSP on one server to run as many PC they need.

Finally some sanity in our education system :))

Sounds good. But they still want to use MS Frontpage for teaching Web Designing.

I know the persons who are behind this and has designed this curriculam they were asking us to find alternative of ms Frontpage but we didnt found any satisfactory opensource tool for this.
Other options where available are Ms-Frontpage and Dreamweaver .
The opensource web development IDE’s are for specific languages and they are too complex for the students of the 12th standard , as students from remote places do not have the access to the newer technology.
The aim was not to make students the master of web development but the aim is to spread the awareness among the students towards what is going in web development and open source community.
And Curriculam has to be design for students who are remote places and villages of gujarat and they dont have access to the technology like we have in cities, so we have to keep in mind that also otherwise that kind of students will phase lots problem and which is not fair thing.

    Thanks,

Bluefish, Nvu, openoffice? Replacement is ok, but I guess it is a good start and with awareness more open source softwares would replace proprietary softwares. I really commend whoever took this bold step.

MSFT has been muscling its power with Govt for some time. When it comes to technology, it needs to be seen that the end users get the best. If there is Industry demand, developers will follow. Look at Open Source. Many governments have shifted away from MSFT and moved to Open Source.

Today LAMP skills are in much higher demand compared to MSFT. When deciding on technology stack, one must see the future. Training people in Frontpage has no value today. Training them in XHTML/CSS/Linux and free software tools will go a long way both for benefit of state and students.

Good going. There is a lot that a student can now do, especially now that there are sites like extramarks.com where a student can get model papers and practice papers apart from asking specific questions and download study materials etc. These resources and its extensive usage will save a lot of time and money for parents and teachers. http://www.extramarks.com/
