Compiz without fglrx on openSUSE 11.1
by cyberorg, Monday, September 29th, 2008 @ 7:45 pm

Great news for the owners of on-board Radeon X1200/1250 Series graphics, fglrx is not required to run Compiz. We can finally become completely “free”. We are using open source radeonhd drivers developed by SUSE engineers on the latest Xorg release.

Changed the following in xorg.conf and viola Compiz is running here!!

Section “Device”
Option “DRI” “1″ #and this works even with radeonhd drivers

Thanks to whoever is responsible for this :)

Update: Sndirsch just informs that this will be default on openSUSE 11.1, so probably right  from Beta 2 Compiz should work out of box on the hardwares using radeonhd drivers.

Whoa! That’s pretty damn cool! Will it work for a HD 4870 running with the catalyst 8.9 drivers? Because if it does then it makes my week. Big thanks for the heads up.

This post is talking about compiz without fglrx/catalyst drivers, using open source radeonhd drivers.

Don’t know if HD 4870 is supported by radeonhd, if it is you dont need amd’s drivers at all.

[...] posts came from the polynymous ’susegeek’/’suseuser’, such as this one and Cyberorg offered news about eye candy, as usual. From Novell/OpenSUSE some came off-topic posts like this one and this from Duncan [...]

    Thanks before.
