by cyberorg, Sunday, December 21st, 2008 @ 12:29 pm Comments (4)

Following up on the release of openSUSE 11.1, the fresh new packages from Compiz Fusion git snapshot are available here.

1-click install of everything there.

Or add http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/cyberorg/openSUSE_11.1/ manually to the repository and install whatever you need.

This repository contains many more plugins and features that are not yet part of official releases. The latest development in this release is use of Google’s Protocol Buffers: a technology that gives massive performance improvements to compiz as well as ccsm and simple-ccsm.

Note: The git snapshot packages are meant for testers and developers only, stable packages  for everyday use are available from X11:XGL repository, see this post for more.

We had a launch party yestarday, the house was completely full, with no space for any more people to even stand.

Showed off Compiz + Gnome and KDE4 + kwin effects, new features in OpenOffice, Evolution, F-spot, Banshee and more…

Also showed off susestudio.com creating live DVD and taking it for a testdrive directly online.

Compiz on openSUSE 11.1
by cyberorg, Thursday, December 4th, 2008 @ 3:31 pm Comments (25)

Although openSUSE 11.1 is almost ready, Compiz that is in it is still not there yet. If you run into some of the remaining annoyances, here is how to get Compiz Fusion bliss on openSUSE 11.1.

Add X11:XGL repository that contains compiz without NOMAD patches

zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_11.1/ X11:XGL

Update all compiz packages from that repo

zypper up -t package -r X11:XGL

After making sure compiz is switched off and disabled, remove old configuration:

rm -rf /home/your-username/.config/compiz

Launch simple-ccsm and enable Compiz.

Have a lot of fun…
