GSOC 09 student’s application open
by cyberorg, Thursday, March 26th, 2009 @ 4:16 pm Comments (2)

Applications from the students are being accepted since last few days, I’d share a little secret ;) if you are a student planning to work hard and have fun at the same time this summer(get big bucks of course) your chances of getting project with openSUSE is quite high so start sending in your proposals. Check out list of ideas on openSUSE Summer of Code 2009 ideas page.

Why your chances are very high? well there are tons of interesting ideas to work on and too few good applications till now. Sending applications early mean you get mentors giving more time to go through your application, it gets lot more views every time mentors logs in their control center and you get lot more time to discuss and fine tune your ideas before submission deadline.

Good luck!

Google Summer of Code 2009
by cyberorg, Friday, March 20th, 2009 @ 3:06 pm Comments (3)

It is that time of year again, students can choose the project they like to work on, get mentored by some of the most experienced contributers in open source world and surprisingly, thanks to Google, get paid USD4500 for all the fun(learning)!!

Last year’s mentoring experience was excellent, I had a privilege of working with a very bright student Jan Weber who worked on creating easy to use LTSP configuration tool: Easy-LTSP.

This year, I have proposed a project on Integrating HPC in KIWI-LTSP. Students with super hacker capabilities who have worked on similar technologies before get in touch with me to discuss anything related to the project. There is a list of other great openSUSE  projects on offer here.

I would like to see a lot of students from India apply this year, especially from all the IITs.

Update: Just discovered ##gsoc-india and google group to go with it.

Compiz 0.8.2 fully released!!

Packages for openSUSE 11.1 users running KDE4 Factory and GNOME 2.26 are available from here.

Bugs/enhancement requests as always goes here.

Have a lot of fun, Shane would have wanted that!

Wanted a way of controling music player on openSUSE via iPhone, after some quick research here is what I found:

http://en.opensuse.org/MPD

Set up MPD and iPodMp is all that is required :)

MPD can also stream via icecast server, but I found Sockso quite painless to run, no configuration required whatsoever, download zip, unzip it and run linux.sh that comes in the zip, import your music collection, create user, point your browser to http://yourserverIP:4444/, enjoy the music from anywhere in the world.

Workshop for the Baroda High School teachers
by cyberorg, Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 @ 5:01 pm Comments (3)

Had a workshop for the IT teachers of the Baroda High School, a group of 4 schools today. The teachers loved openSUSE, were swept off their seat looking at some of the Compiz effects(at least I am sure they liked fishes in the bowl).

Click to see the big picture

Don’t they all look happy with their openSUSE DVDs?

Next on their agenda is set up all their labs to run LTSP with a ton of openSUSE-Edu applications.
