Finally Windows users can get Compiz easily!!
by cyberorg,
Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 @ 7:31 am
On behalf of Compiz developers and the super smart guys at Novell-Microsoft Interop lab, I am happy to announce the easy way to get Compiz for Windows users.
Download Compiz for Windows users.
Run the .exe file, follow the familiar on screen wizard, reboot, that simple.
Special thanks to Jordi Massaguer Pla and his team for making this possible.
Here is another great use of Compiz(sic), you can now spin openSUSE installer cube.
Edit: This was april fool joke for all the people still(It’s November!!) leaving comment here after trying to get compiz on their Windoz. Hard luck fellas get the real OS that can run compiz.

oh cool… can you post how its working?
i just cant find this C:\openSUSE\boot\i386\loader\initrd
hope you can help.
: tester, April 1, 2009 @ 12:46 pm
yeah no problem
I was confused too, but it’s actually quite easy. The installer has a wrong folder connection so you’ll have to do it a different way. Because compiz-fusion kicks out the running WM and of course we still are talking about windows (only tested on xp/vista!), you’ll have to get a linux-live-cd first. I still had one of those opensuse thingies lying around:
http://en.opensuse.org/Download
but ubuntu or whatever will work just as well. First of all: install it.
Then, once everything is on your computer, download the installer. Don’t worry about it being a exe file, linux can run those just as well through wine. So no worries
That’s how I got it running. Good luck!

NOVELL IS WINNING A JUDGEMENT AGAINST THE UNIXWARE, OWNER OF NOVELLWARE ON NET SYSTEMS, AND VERY FRIENDLY PARTNER OF OUR BEST ENEMY … MICROSOOOOFT!!!!
PLEASE, PEOPLE MAKE THE CHANGE AND THE DIFFERENCE BECAUSE OPENSUSE IS AN EYE CANDY BUT WHO WANTS AN EYE CANDY WHEN U DONT HAVE FLEXIBILITY AND FREEDOM OF LINUX AND OPEN SOURCE PHILOSOPHY…
PLEASE, LET THE PEOPLE CHOOSE THE BEST … AND THE BEST WORKS … THE PEOPLE HAVE TO LEARN BY A EASY WAY … IT IS DIFFERENT AGAINST THE PEOPLE DONT HAVE TO LEARN PHILOSOPHY OF OPENSUSE WITH ITS INFLEXIBLE YAST CONTROL CENTER, A IMPLEMENTATION OF CONTROL PANEL OF WINDOWS … WHAT IS THE JOKE TO HAVE AN INFLEXIBLE SYSTEM INSIDE A FLEXIBLE PHILOSOPHY.
PLEASE GUIDE THE PEOPLE TO CHOOSE PROPERLY DISTROS, LIKE SLACKWARE BASED, DEBIAN BASED, OR INCLUSIVELY UBUNTU BASED.
: John, April 19, 2009 @ 11:51 pm
This is too funny. Linux will always be a coffee table OS because no one is driving the bus… Microsoft will not be dethroned as long as no one stands ready to soak up the market share when they make a Vista sized mistake. Yes Microsoft is fat and lazy, its true, just look at Vista. But since they control the market for OEM’s and the desktop markets for business they can afford to be. I am running a copy of Ubuntu on one of my PC’s and yes I like compiz as much as the next guy, but its a novelty. I do my work and run my business on a Vista based laptop hooked to a Windows 2008 based network…
If the open source world is so flexible, so desirable, and so freeing, then why doesn’t it make a bigger splash in the desktop market? I don’t want to hear some half cooked conspiracy theory; the fact is while Linux has come a long long way, and there are thousands of users running Linux, there is no corporate structure that is aiming to take some of the market share much less is poised to even threaten Microsoft’s hold on the desktop.
It’s simple economics really. Someone needs to prepare and set themselves up to take some market share, then when the fat dumb slobs at Microsoft build another Vista, the company had a chance to make some money and earn a name for themselves… Ubuntu has the right attitude. It should just work; instability and all that aside - when people buy a PC, they are likely going to use the OS that comes on it. We are a different breed of user, we like the freedoms that come with Linux, but with that comes a lot of geekdom that the average Joe doesn’t possess. So from a certain point of view we don’t really count… sucks doesn’t it?
So, we continue on, making our jokes, laughing at Microsoft users, and thumbing our noses at Microsoft… and M$ carries merrily on, not giving us a second thought because we pose no threat to their way of life…
Why can’t we do better?
Just Thinking…

I suddenly became extreeeemely interested in linux operating systems after i saw an article about portable operaating systems (usb).
so for the past two weeks i have tried and installed Opensuse11.1, ubuntu 9.04, slax, dsl, slitaz, fedora etc .
by far slax was perfect for a operating system for multimedia playback on a relatively slow computer.
Ubuntu was most matured among them but ……… none of the linux operating systems can actually go near windows in support, compatibility, looks (windows 7) and user freindlyness.
compiz is a great desktop enhancement tool but is not fast with all video cards(even my 4850 1gb),, plus its very buggy (in ubuntu 9.04)
but its true that there would be no stopping microsoft, if windows had something like compiz.
: Flip, April 29, 2009 @ 2:53 am
@ sartaz just try it a little bit longer and you will see that linux is much more better then windows..
The only thing is, you have to configure it;)

No one wants a thing that is extremely easy to get.
: TheCompKid, May 16, 2009 @ 10:29 pm
A few days ago, the power went out and I could not boot Vista. Instead, whatever I selected in the windows OS selection box, I was forced to go to the screen with the “Error 17: File not found” and when I pressed a key to continue, I was stuck with grub. I had to get on another computer in my house a few days later and look it up on the Internet. Then the Windows Recovery program fixed it. That explains this USELESS CRUD! AAAAH!

1st) Compiz on Windows is next to impossible. Not that it isn’t possible to make it run, I guess, just that Microsoft locks everything down so much (as does Apple), since both are proprietary operating systems. If they gave people enough access and info about how the windowing systems worked on their OSes, then theoretically it would be possible to run Compiz. However since this will likely never happen, Compiz in Windows or OSX is IMPOSSIBLE. Anything like Yod’m 3D is added on and not as feature-rich, or as fast as Compiz. “that sort of technology” as you put it is exactly the thing Windows will NEVER have, since Windows is closed to anyone outside Microsoft.
2nd) The thing that makes Linux so great is that no 1 person owns it. Making it easy to get “under the hood” and tweak whatever you want. Compiz is able to do what it can on Linux because Linux is open-source, and allows you to do whatever you want to it.
3rd) Again “that sort of technology” is not why I use Linux. I started before Compiz and Beryl, I remember hearing vauge things about Luminocity when I started getting seriously into Linux, but that was just a technology show-off and not really in anything. “that sort of technology” is only available because of Linux’s open-source nature, something Microsoft will NEVER do is give enough access for people to make Winpiz.
In short “THIS WAS AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE, (probably) WILL NOT EVER HAPPEN!”

: Windows User, August 23, 2009 @ 8:31 am
I personally would be happy to switch to Ubuntu if:
1) Ubuntu gets something (Compiz plugin perhaps?) akin to aero with transparent window borders and custom skins and shit
2) Compiz actually becomes reasonably stable
3) It becomes possible to create some dock-thing for Ubuntu with equivalent functionality and quality to the Windows superbar
4) A compiz plugin that allows you to dock windows to the side of the screen like in W7 is created
5) Wine supports Vista aero theme
6) Photoshop works on Ubuntu
6) Spore works on Ubuntu
6) Microsoft Office works on Ubuntu
6) Portal and Half Life 2 e1 & e2 work on Ubuntu
: yoophglup, August 24, 2009 @ 12:33 am
Just for future readers:
1) ubuntu allows install of any windows decorator allowing one to setup up transparent window borders and custom window skins.
2) Compiz is very stable on the OS side. The unstable issue is usualy caused by some application used by a user. Windows Aero has the same issues but it has a feature that turns it off when you run a program that might cause problems. I’ve been using compiz for a year and it works great!!!
3) Ubuntu has great customizable start menus as well as wiglets.
4) with compiz you can create or download many plugins
5) you can customize your compiz to clone windows aero theme then select under wine to use window decorators thus you would have the same output as a windows aero theme
6) Photoshop works with wine but not the current version. Open source alternatives are available and free.
6) who cares about spores realy???
6) Microsoft office works almost perfect under Crossover
6) Portal works with Steam under wine and Sedega
I use Linux and Windows in my home. I have a Windows Vista media center and a linux desktop pc. I like windows for media, its good for entertaining. I like Linux for everything else.

Linux vs Windows debates will go on forever. I would like to sugest that there is a benefit to being able to use Linux software like Compiz (as well as the other more useful programs on Linux) on Windows.
First, if you are developing Linux software independently from the major Linux distros then including a Windows version means more users will get to use and love your wonderful creation. Limiting to Linux only means cutting out a huge percentage of potetial users!
Second, manufacturers of the very latest cool hardware for PCs mostly only produce drivers for Windows. Sure, it’s not open source or GNU etc. but why discount it when you paid for it when you purchased the hardware? Do you really think all the purchase price goes towards only the hardware?
All versions of Linux I have tried on my current machine have video corruption because the drivers for my on-board video are full of bugs!
Third, as a home user as well as a ‘computer geek’ I use my PC for playing games as well as the geek stuff I do! It’s a huge pain in the butt to have to reboot the machine (yeah, I can only afford 1 right now) just to play a cool game that wont run in Linux.
There are more very compelling reasons that I just cant remember right now that will no doubt come back to me after I have posted this!
What I would like to see is versions of the superior Linux desktops running on Windows as a replacement to Explorer (Especially the Vista version!). There are attempts out there, the best so far is KDE 4 Win but it is still only in beta form and has too many bugs to be able to use it full time as a replacement to Explorer!
Another thing I would like to point out… I have noticed a couple of postings on this thread that falsely claim Linux to be 100% free! Yes, the concept of Linux was for it to be free but many of the largest distros out there are now (and have been for years now) asking for users to purchase thier distro if they want full functionailty as well as support. Red Hat are doing it, Mandriva (once Mandrake) are doing it, even SUSE! Though SUSE has an openSUSE version which is not as bad as the other two big distros. I remember when all these were 100% free.
Also, there ARE more and more computers being sold with the option of having Linux pre-installed. Most using the 100% free Ubuntu distro. So let’s stop whining on about how Linux is being ignored by the people who manufacture and sell PCs. They do listen to demand, it’s their job. The numbers of systems available with Linux reflect the number of people who are not geeks but want Linux. The numbers are growing and so the number of systems with Linux are growing with them. When they get large enough, PC game developers might start looking into producing Linux versions too. The same thing happened with MacOS!
If you want to be serious about open source development and free software for all, stop discounting Windows just because it’s by Microsoft! That goes against the spirit of open source and FREE FOR ALL software. Grow up and be more open minded.
Spread the word, open source, open mind

You people are dipshits. Windows kicks ass, once you are spoiled by windows you will lie cheat and torrent to get it. Linux is good for hacking shit and special projects and things. It will NEVER be a daily driver OS. The GPL fucks itself by not letting anyone make any money off of it. So for the people who run linux as their daily full time OS, enjoy your hobbyist OS, you get what you pay for, nothing, you get what people feel like giving you because they spend their free time programming it. Linux is pretty awesome for what it is, a free OS made by people on the internet, but without money driving it to innovate and have all the good stuff and compatibility of windows, and also the ability to configure everything from a GUI and not arcane command line text files and commands, it will NEVER be the year of the linux desktop. I have been using ubuntu since 6.04 and its gotten better but it always feels like the suck. Everything they come out with a new version I try to run it as a daily driver and end up going back to windows. My prefered way to run linux is inside a virtual machine in windows, so I can get to all the good hacking tools and security apps and do what I want to do but don’t have to suffer having it be the entire OS. Linux always has and always will be just a bunch of hacking apps, and a decent server OS, it will never be an awesome desktop OS, unless someone starts a company, somehow closes the source code, and starts making that shit awesome and selling it.
: Xiox, November 13, 2009 @ 6:23 pm
Don’t you think it’s kind of sad that the emphasis on Linux relys solely on Compiz-Fusion??
Basically most of you are saying that there would be no reason for Linux users to use linux at all if it wasn’t for compiz-fusion… kinda sad, screw the functionality!!
I’m a fan for the new Win7, mainly because MOST companies will be using it, it supports common software, and I don’t have to bust my ass to port a windows apps into a whole nother OS that I have to learn… lol but that’s just me.. just seems more ideal to common users, windows just makes a bit more sense to me.
: flareo, November 14, 2009 @ 2:45 pm
nice joke hahaha, for windows user’s, why dont u start in safemode, and disable start up of opensuse. it work for me
it’s to bad game’s suplyer not suport linux as it suport for windows, so i leave slackware, ubuntu, opensuse, ect.
windows 7 is enough
: noia, November 14, 2009 @ 3:16 pm
To each their own… I’ve been using GNU/Linux years before compiz came out and have seen how far it’s come. it’s getting easier to use, there’s a linux section in most australian computer magazines now, and the distros are making more frontends for configuration. it’s true it will be known for being complex for a fair while, but I’ve converted a few windblows users to Linux mint and they love it
the only reason i see for using windows is for playing some games. GNU/Linux is becoming more popular and more user friendly. it’s only a matter of time before mainstream game developers start making GNU/Linux ports… as for compiz being just eye candy, that’s true, but so are windows themes and aero… compiz requires less cpu and gpu power anyways and if it’s attracting users to convert, then that’s a starting point.
: jatin, November 14, 2009 @ 4:06 pm
oohh mann… i missed the great compiz just because it is not working with windows 7, but the good thing is, i have linux too…

For all of those that are saying that this is infected with some thing you are lying.
Here is the Virus Total Report 0/41 virus engines scanned the Compiz.exe an none reported anything.
I am in the process of trying to install this on XpX64 with the openSUSE 11.2 DISC that I am downloading, did not realize it was 4GB .
Will report back with how it worked out.

In addition to my above post, if installing this openSUSE 11.2 4GB DISC is needed for the Compiz process to have it installed, then it better be worth it?

I like how when I reboot I don’t even get to my OS choices menu. It sends me straight to “opensuse 11.1 installer” and says “error 17: file not found”. If I can’t find a way to fix this then I am going to be getting a new computer, at the expense of this wesite owner.

Get the new exe file
And read the “Edit”.
