A real sphere deformation!
by Dennis Kasprzyk, Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 @ 9:00 pm Comments (45)

I’ve merged cubecaps into cubeaddon, to be able to transform the cube caps. With this functionality I was able to create a full sphere deformation of the cube. I’ve also fixed the rotate plugin to report proper progress for the inside cube mode to allow deformation in “inside cube”.

    Absolutely amazing.
    Also, as crdlb said in #-dev (more or less): One less plugin that needs to be watched. Now we just need an awesome sphere/reflections/caps icon for Cube Addon…

    this would be fantastic with multiple desktop backgrounds and cube caps all mapped to reproduce an earth globe, and a realistic (as in real data based) star map as the skysphere….. :) anyone can make that happen and i think i’ll definitely change to the git version (currently using hardy’s packages, used to use git but haven’t since i updated)

  25. : thelastknowngod, May 8, 2008 @ 1:40 am

    this would be cool if they could implement an actual spherical desktop. get rid of different virtual desktops and just have one round space that you can increase the circumference of. that would be awesome.

    I don’t know, I would like to see news like “compiz gets faster / compiz now not slow when you resize a window / compiz now don’t show black bars sometimes when you maximize a complex-gui window (firefox, for instance)”. I like this, but come on! I want performance improvements :(

    @silencer
    I’ll address your three points separately ;-)

    1) I’m sure that there is always room for optimization in compiz and other plugins. Of course, speed always depends on factors like how fast your system is, how many plugins you have loaded, how many windows you have open etc. The developers can’t make compiz fast all the time ;-)

    2) If I remember correctly, slow resize is due to the way the X Server, graphics drivers and the texture from pixmap specification works. You’ll have to ask onestone for more info, bu I believe it has something to do with the amount of processing required to free textures, resize the window, initiate textures, apply them, etc. Again, ask onestone as he knows more about it. If you want a faster resize, you’ll have to use one of the ‘workaround’ modes like ’stretch’ or ‘outline’

    3) This has something to do with applications not supporting _NET_WM_SYNC (or something like that). I know for a fact that firefox doesn’t. Bug the FF devs ;-)

    how can i install it? please, write some step-by-step manual, coz it’s not clear how to install compiz git and compile this pugin…… it looks cool in screenshot but how can i install it?

    WOW NOW I CAN PROJECT MY DESKTOP ONTO A SPHERE!

    How is this useful? Is this meant to improve desktop interface, or is it just a neat display hack?

  36. : silencer, May 11, 2008 @ 4:28 pm

    @SmSpillaz

    Thanks a lot for the info! :) I knew there were workarounds for the resize slowness, but I would like it to be faster while drawing the whole window being resized. I guess will have to wait. About firefox, I didn’t know that, I’ll search for info about it. cheers!

    Ok, I like this plugin. It is neet to see the desktop mapped onto a sphere…. But I do agree with an earlier post. I think we are going about this all wrong. Instead of mapping the virtual desktops to a sphere, we need to get rid of virtual desktops and have a single sphere from the inside. That way you have place windows on the sphere surface and work with one window at a time zoomed in. I think that I have seen this for Windows ™… That would be really cool.

    hi! is there any way to get this sphere? please!

  42. : b0le, May 14, 2008 @ 1:12 am

    To all who are trying to get it. It needs _latest_ compiz (ie from git-master) – so it won’t work with hardy’s default install. If you already have compiled compiz, it should be there already, as cubeaddons is in plugins-extra

  43. : Ubunturer, May 20, 2008 @ 6:04 pm

    I cant install the cubeaddon from git cause it always get error im using a tut that i find here at http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=8214, and using the git fusion/plugins/cubeaddon
    Cube reflection and cylinder …
